Chapter Thirty-One

Lucky managed to get the still-unconscious Elizabeth out of her seat belt. He picked her up, oblivious to her weight and his bleeding hand. He carried her out of the car.

They were about ten feet away when the car exploded.

Lucky dropped to the ground, partly involuntarily, and sheltered Elizabeth from the sharp shrapnel with his body. He grimaced as something became imbedded in his right leg.

Everything grew silent, except for the fire and the sirens. Then he heard his father.

"Lucky!" Luke yelled.

"I'm over here, Dad!" Lucky yelled back. He began to cough from the smoke. He moved Elizabeth to the sidewalk.

Her face was pale and her eyes were closed. He kneeled down next to her, barely aware of the sharp, increasing pain in his right leg.

Her pulse was very faint.

"Thank God you're safe!" Luke cried, seeing Lucky kneeling next to Elizabeth as the paramedics rushed towards them.

"Cassadine.... Lucky, slow down...." Ria looked up from her book when she heard her younger brother's name. She was walking away when Nikolas grabbed her arm, making her stay put. "You're at GH..... Oh my God..... OK, I'll be there in five minutes." Nikolas hung up the phone.

"Nikolas, are you OK? What happened?"

"Elizabeth Webber was in a car accident. Lucky saved her life. I'll explain on the way."

"On the way?"

"To GH." Nikolas finished.

Chapter Thirty-Two

"Bobbie keeps telling me that you can hear what I'm saying to you. I guess when you wake up, you can tell me if it's true." Lucky sighed, the silence in the room filled by the steady pulse of the monitors.

He was alone in the hospital room, except for Elizabeth and the noisy monitors surrounding her. Elizabeth was lying completely still on the sterile white hospital bed. Her face was pale and unmoving, looking perfect, except for one scar at her hairline.A cane was propped up next to Elizabeth's bed.

"It's been two weeks since the crash. The plan is going along just fine, but... I don't know, when I needed him, Dad was there for me, but when it was over, I just pushed him away, like things were the way they had been. But, they're not..." Lucky bit his lip and looked away for a few seconds. "Ria and Nikolas' paternity test results should be here soon, which means we'll be moving along in the plan.... I don't really care about the damn plan right now. Elizabeth, you need to wake up from this coma." Lucky grabbed one of Elizabeth's limp hands. "Liz, wake up. You have to wake up. I need you to wake up." Lucky sighed and placed Elizabeth's hand back down. "I need you, Elizabeth. It used to just be about you needing me to help you after the rape, but now I need you!" Lucky's voice dropped to a whisper. "I need you more than anything."

Elizabeth's right index finger twitched.

Chapter Thirty-Three

"I'm sorry I neglected you lately. I was just so caught up in my revenge plan- It doesn't matter anymore." Lucky looked out the window, but kept talking.

Elizabeth's eyelids fluttered.

"Nothing really matters anymore. Not until you get better." Elizabeth opened her eyes. She tried to say his name, but nothing came out. He was still looking out the window.

"I can't take this much longer, Elizabeth. They're starting to give up hope. I don't care how long it takes. I need you to wake up, and I'll wait if I have to."

Elizabeth weakly reached her right hand up and touched his face.

Lucky jumped and grabbed her hand. He turned and stared at her, unable to move.

"My God! You're awake!" he whispered.

"Nikolas! The results are here!" Ria yelled.

"Great. The company paper is in the printer, ready to go." Nikolas replied. "Let's look at them so we can copy the format."

"And the font type, size, and alignment." Ria added. She ripped open the envelope and pulled out the paper inside. "Allow me to read it, dear brother!"

Ria cleared her throat.

" 'Dear Sir or Madam, The results of the paternity of one Valéria Dubois and one Nikolas Cassadine, are as follows: Nikolas Cassadine, father-' What the hell? 'Valéria Dubois, father-' Holy shit, Nikolas!"

"What? What is it?" Nikolas asked in alarm. Ria looked up from the paper.

"Luke really is our father!" Ria replied, her eyes wide.

Chapter Thirty-Four

"Lucky," Elizabeth whispered hoarsely, barely audible.

"What is it, Elizabeth?" Lucky asked, leaning close to hear her.

"How? How did I get here?"

"You don't remember the car crash?"

"I remember-" Elizabeth began, her voice slowly getting stronger. "I remember driving and then there was a bright light, and a loud sound, and I hit my head on the steering wheel, I think, and I smelled something, and then there was nothing."

"I was a couple of yards in front of you. I got the door open, Dad - Luke called the paramedics, and I carried you out of there a few seconds before the car exploded." Lucky patted her on the hand.

"My God! What happened to your hand?" Elizabeth exclaimed, grabbing his hand in hers, running her fingers over the dark scars.

"Your door was locked. I had to punch the window in to unlock the door. I'm sorry, I think I cut your arm up when I did that." Elizabeth looked up from his hand and stared at him incredulously.

"You saved my life and you're apologizing for cutting up my arm?" Lucky smiled sheepishly. Then he got a look of surprise on his face.

"I need to go get a nurse!" He cried. He leaned over and grabbed the cane next to her bed, leaning on it heavily in order to stand up.

"What happened to you? Sit down, I'll use the call button!" Elizabeth cried, not letting go of his injured hand. She pushed the button while Lucky slowly sat back down.

"Yeah, what do you want?" Ria answered the phone angrily.

"What happened?" Lucky asked.

"Oh nothing! Nothing! We got the damn test back."

"So what's wrong, you can't change it?"

"Oh, it's worse than that, li'l bro. We don't need to change it!"

"What? You mean-"

"We aren't half-sibs anymore." Ria was calming down. "Sorry, Lucky, you called right after I got the news. Nik is still fuming. Why did you call?"

"Elizabeth's awake."

"Oh my God! That's terrific! Nik and I will be right over!"

"Okay. Good, Elizabeth has been dying to meet you."

"See you in about ten minutes!" Ria replied, hanging up.

Chapter Thirty-Five

"Lucky?" Elizabeth asked weakly, but at least she was audible now.

"Yeah, what is it?"

"How did you hurt your leg?"

"Oh, uh, after the explosion, I got hit by some of the car pieces."

"Lucky!"

"What?" Lucky asked, meeting her eye. She smiled and almost blushed.

"Thank you." They held each other's glance for a few seconds before he looked away.

"So, what was it like, being in a coma?"

"It was kind of like being asleep, I mean, I dreamed stuff, but it seemed so real, I was disoriented when I woke up."

"What did you dream?"

"I-I was walking through the park again. I didn't sit down, though. And somebody grabbed me from behind again."

"Liz-"

"Then all of a sudden, he was gone and somebody grabbed my hand. I turned and you were standing in front of me. And you said-" Elizabeth stopped talking. "Um, nevermind."

"What? What did I say?"

"Um, you said that, um," Elizbaeth's voice dropped. "that you needed me." She looked away.

Lucky had a shocked look on his face. Elizabeth looked at him.

"I don't why you said that in my dream, you just did." She sighed. "I shouldn't have said anything."

"Um, Elizabeth?"

"Yeah?" She replied in a sheepish tone.

"When you were- Just before you woke up, I kinda said that." It was Lucky's turn to look away and Elizabeth had a shocked look on her face now.

"That's it," she whispered.

"What?" he asked, looking at her.

"The doctor said usually somebody says something or does something to bring a person out of the coma." Elizabeth looked at Lucky. "I think it was you."

"I-" Lucky began, before changing his mind. "How much did you hear?" Elizabeth closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"You let go of my hand and said something really quietly. You said..." Elizabeth trailed off. She opened her eyes and stared at him. "Did you mean that? 'More than anything'?"

Lucky looked at her. She looked small and uncertain, all pale with that gash on her forehead, as she looked at him with hope in her eyes and a few traces of innocence. She looked like she needed someone to protect her.

Lucky put his wounded hand on top of hers.

"Yes," he replied.
